Seventy Steps is a Lovecraftian soulslike in the look of late-’90s 3D: low-poly worlds, pixel sprites, dithered fog, and nights that are truly dark.

Arkham, October 1928.  Eleven people have fallen asleep and cannot be woken. Their eyes move under the lids, as if they were reading.

Dr. Armitage draws you the sign the old towns cut over their doors, hands you a lamp, and sends you after the sleepers. You lie down in the reading room, hear the clock strike eleven, and open your eyes in a town you do not know.

  • An open dream to get lost in. 13 regions, from Arkham and Dunwich to Innsmouth, the Mountains of Madness, the Dreamlands, R’lyeh and Yuggoth, with 28 dungeons between them.
  • 40+ bosses. The Dunwich Horror, Father Dagon, Shub-Niggurath, Hastur, Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep, Yog-Sothoth, Azathoth… Each has its own arena, its own theme, and a trick you’ll need besides your blade.
  • Your mind is a resource. Sanity drains in the dark and at what you witness. As it fails, the world changes: wrong stars, whispers, things that were never there. Lamplight and laudanum bring you back.
  • Soulslike combat, with a revolver on your hip. Dodge, parry and riposte with a sword-cane, an axe, a razor, a cutlass or an espada. Six shots, then reload. Heal with West’s Reagent.
  • Rest at the Elder Signs. Find and light 41 of them. Grow stronger with Echoes; lose them when you fall, then go back for them.
  • 90+ kinds of creature. Packs that take turns to strike, and things you can’t see until you know too much.
  • A world that speaks. Voiced people and voiced horrors, quests, tomes, and 63 original tracks (15 for the realms, 48 boss themes).
  • 3 difficulties, 3 endings, and a second journey for those who come back.

  • Windows: if SmartScreen stops it, click More info → Run anyway. The game isn’t code-signed yet.
  • Mac: if macOS won’t open it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. The game isn’t notarised yet.

I am really strapped for cash right now and so I was poking around for a game to enjoy while I am struggling and I am so glad I found this. I feel bad that I could not throw something the developer's way because $5 as an asking price is beyond reasonable for how good this experience was. I do not want to spoil anything because I could not in text form do justice to how much fun I had with this game so far. I was able to pick this game up during the developer's 100% free give away sale period and I am of the opinion that if I could I would easily pay $10 for this game. This is a game that under promises, under-prices, and over-delivers and you should play if you are reading this comment!
